Rocky landscape of flat-topped mesas and stony gibber desert strikes every visitor of Breakaways, one of South Australia’s Outback gems. It is a large national reserve just off the Stuart Highway near Coober Pedy.
The Breakaways Reserve formation is said to be the result of the evaporation of an inland, ancient, Australian sea. Over 70 million years ago, the area was covered by a vast inland sea. These remnants provide breathtaking views and geological interests.
The vibrant colors of sandstones are amazing especially during sunset.
Aside from being rich in Aboriginal and European history, the region is also a home to a wide array of flora and fauna. These flora and fauna have impressively adapted to the world’s harshest environments. One of Australia’s best kept-secrets, Breakaways is a must-visit attraction!
