Charter Towers is a city in northern Queensland, Australia and boomed during the development of rich gold deposits under the city. The town became a major mining and business center during the Charter Towers gold rush in the 1870’s. The region is drained by the Burdekin River.

It was Queensland’s second largest town by 1890. In the later part of 2006, the major operator was Citigold which invested a big amount of money to develop the mine. The mine is the largest high grade gold deposit in Australia, producing 6.6Moz of gold in 46 years.

Since 1948, the Charter Towers Godfield Ashes has been an amateur ticket carnival held over the long weekend of January. The city’s golden heritage is celebrated with what they call the “Ghosts of Gold” Heritage Trail. It incorporates today’s existing sites which have connection with the city’s gold rush.
