An important refuge for local wildlife, Glen Helen Gorge is a wonderful place to view the West MacDonnell Ranges. Visitors can take a cool dip in here. It is located 132 kilometers from Alice Springs and is a well-known overnight stop over for drivers embarking on the Red Centre Way from Alice Springs.
About 500 million years ago, sandstone was deposited in this area when it was a huge inland sea. The ranges at Glen Helen Gorge part to make way for the Finke River. The first thing that visitors will see when they arrive is the beautiful landscape. One of these is the towering sandstone wall. The area also includes one of the highest points in Central Australia – the Mount Sonder. The Mount Sonder changes in colors when exposed to light. The colony of black-footed rock wallabies can be seen in the late afternoon and early evening in the rocky slopes around the gorge.
